Narrative

From the IGI: JAMES ALLSOP - International Genealogical Index. Gender: Male Christening: 07 JAN 1844 Rugeley, Stafford, England. Births Sep 1843 Alsop James Stone 17 19.

In the 1851 census, with his grandmother Mary Gray in Shifnal, and in 1861 he is a servant, a cow herd, at Milwich, Staffordshire. In the 1871 census he is a shop assistant at a grocer's in Kirkdale, Everton, Liverpool, unmarried, born in Rugeley, age 27.

After this, the only James with a similar name born in Rugeley and of the right age is this, with the form of name commonly found in the area. It looks as though he might have adopted this different spelling, ie two 'ls' and two 'ps'.

Is this his marriage? Marriages Sep 1874 Allsopp James to Elizabeth Griffiths W Derby 8b 849. In the 1881 census for 110 Edinburgh St, Everton, Lancashire, England , he is now a grocer, born in Rugeley, Staffordshire with three children. He and Elizabeth are living with her father, who is boarding with them.

In 1891, they are in Everton with one more child, Catherine and a newphew William from Staffordshire who is also a grocer. They had two grocery assistants age 17 living in. James was plainly doing well. Interesting to note that someone has transcribed Lancashire as Leicestershire!

In the 1901 census for 110 Edinburgh Street, Everton, Elizabeth is listed as 'Head' and James as 'husband'. Their oldest son has died, age 16, and their nephew is no longer with them either. James now assists his wife in keeping the shop. Their daughter Catherine probably keeps house and the two younger sons work in the shop. There are no assistants now. Maybe James had been ill or injured, or could no longer cope.
